CIGRE NGN Women In Energy (WiE) Roundtable Discussion – A Webinar on 26th October 2021

CIGRE NGN was established to connect younger generations with senior generations to ensure that everyone’s opinions and views are heard. We bring a fresh look to an ageing industry and more importantly, to give inexperienced engineers opportunities to learn from experts within the industry. 

Two CIGRE NGN groups, Italy and UK will host an Inclusion and Diversity webinar on 26th Oct, 1-2:30pm BST, 2-3:30pm CEST. The event will start with two presentations along with some key insights for gender equality from Italian NGN followed by UK NGN. 

After that, a panel discussion with 8 members will follow, 3 panellists from UK, 1 guest from Denmark, 3 panellists from Italy. The panellists will have to give their views on topics related to gender and salary gaps, impact of maternity leave on the workplace, low STEM participation, lack of female representation on boards, biggest achievements and opportunities as well as potential ways forward. Jingyi Wan, international lead of the CIGRE NGN International and UK Committee, will steer the panel discussion and provide the concluding remarks.

Speaker Bio:

Jingyi Wan

Jingyi Wan is a Senior Engineering Consultant for HV Cable Systems at Arcadis. Technical expertise is on onshore/offshore Cable Systems design, manufacture and technical advisory at various stages of project life cycle. Before working as a consultant, she worked as a product development engineer for a subsea cable supplier. Worked with a team to qualify and supply the cables for the industry’s first commercial 66kV array cable project. She is the UK Representative of CIGRE NGN International Executive Committee, also a young expert member of CIGRE working groups on B1 insulated cable. Jingyi Wan  (UK, Moderator)

 

 

 

AriannaArianna Guarneri works in Rome for the Italian Transmission System Operator (TSO), Terna since 2007, dealing with Environmental Protection, Authorisation and Connection Procedures to the High Voltage Electric Grid, Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF’s Reference person in Terna). In 2018 she qualified as well as Envision SP (Envision Protocol for Sustainable Infrastructure). Before working in Terna she worked 4 years in characterization and remediation of contaminated sites (brownfields, landfills). She is member of Technical Committees in Technical Committee TC 106 Methods for the assessment of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields (EMFs) associated with human exposure and member of the EMF working group in ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity). Member of CIGRE since 2007, participating in EMF’s Working Groups, she is Women in Cigré Liaison Lead in CIGRE Next Generation Network (NGN). Arianna Guarneri  (Italy, Presenter & Panellist)

 

 

AngelikiKelly joined the R&D UK Centre of EDF Energy in June 2020. She specialises in optimal valuation of energy storage co-located with renewables and long-term electricity price forecasting, with her products being provided to Pivot Power. Previously, she was working as a Modelling Analyst at Energy Systems Catapult, with main projects in energy storage, power system economics and second-life batteries. She also holds a PhD in battery storage, which was completed in the Centre for Doctoral Training in Power Networks of The University of Manchester (UoM). Currently, she is the vice-chair of the IEEE PES UK&I Women in Power Network, the project manager of Cigre’s Women Network, the digital lead of EDF Women’s Network and she also serves as a data science instructor at SisterAnalyst. Angeliki Loukatou  (UK, Presenter & Panellist)

 

Siva

Siva Kaviya, Trichy Siva Raman is a Power System Software Engineer working for the IPSA Software Team within the scope of Networks & Innovation Team of TNEI, based in Manchester. She has over 2+ years of professional work experience in Java Development followed by six years of Academics Experience in the field of Power Systems and Smart Grids with a good understanding of the European Energy Markets. She also has significant experience working with developing tool kits and software required for Power System Engineering Domain. Qinghua

Qinghua Han is a PhD student in Materials for Demanding Environments Doctoral Training Centre at the University of Manchester. Her project focuses on the electrical insulation systems for electric aircraft. She attained the master degree in Advanced Engineering Materials from the University of Manchester. Her principal research interests are to improve the insulation system for high voltage equipment by adopting high dielectric strength gases. Daniela

Daniela Pagnani is Chair of CIGRE NGN Denmark steering committee. Since 2019, she is with Ørsted and Aalborg University as Industrial PhD researching on black start capabilities of offshore wind farms.

She received the M.Sc. degree in electrical power systems and high voltage engineering from Aalborg University in 2019, and the B.Sc. degree in industrial engineering (electrical specialisation) from University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (Italy) in 2017. Her current research interests include black start by renewable energy sources, power system restoration, grid-forming control of converters, battery energy storage systems and wind turbines, system modelling and simulations. Daniela Pagnani (Denmark, Panellist)

Giulia Gemma Pancaro is an Electrical Engineer at Terna, the Italian Trasmission System Operator. Patrizia

Patrizia Fabozzi is an Environmental Engineer working in Health, Safety & Environment field at Terna Rete Italia. She is involved also in management requirements major-accident hazards legislation for some storage pilot plants, located in the South of Italy. Before this role, she worked for the same company for negotiations and relationships with local authorities to determine location, mitigation and compensation of new power lines and electrical stations, as well as supporting for the authorization phase. She begun her working experience in renewable resources, as project engineer of wind farms, following authorization iter for the construction of big and mini wind power plants. Patrizia Fabozzi (Italy, Panellist)

 

 

 

 

Beatrice

Beatrice Giachi is a Senior Project Engineer in Terna, the Italian Transmission System Operator. The main experience is in design and execution of complex project concerning to civil construction of electrical stations, both in green and brownfield. She has been working for the company since 2010 based in Florence, where she lives with her family and two daughters. Before this role she had been worked for the Health and Safety department and started her professional experience in 2006. Jianing Li presented the activities of the NGN (Next Generation Network) Section of CIGRE UK, then went on to Chair the event.

Dechao Kong introduced the Cigre B4 Study Committee, highlighting its scope, structure, leadership, and past events. He further kicked off the presentation with the topic GB Transmission System Operability considerations for HVDC and PE applications covering potential roadmap by 2050 from the generation mix perspective of the onshore and offshore interconnector, impact of the net-zero target and climate considerations followed by potential impacts and challenges for system operability with respect to system inertia, its impact and discussed further the current development and potential opportunities for the network operability pathfinders.

Theodor Heath gave a brief introduction about himself, started off his presentation by taking us through the global outlook of the generation mix with respect to grids, renewables, and PV & Wind how these technologies can help us in achieving the demand and enable us in progressing to the much-anticipated energy transition. Next, he touched upon the UK HVDC & FACTS Market by giving us an overview of the estimated market size and a key market player like Hitachi ABB, Siemens, GE, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, and Prysmian. Furthermore, he took us through the plan for UK markets and targets highlighting the functional impact of renewables, interconnectors, and offshore winds farms. He also gave brief applicational examples for the prevailing HVDC Connections, the scope for multi-terminal HVDC technology, the existing IGBT progressions, consideration for reduced Inertia with case studies supporting them. Theodor concluded his presentation by giving Insight into the challenges associated with Power electronics integration, followed by giving us a brief overview of his research group and their area of research.

Mark Osborne gave a brief introduction about himself, followed by giving us an overview of the existing utility. He then summarised the Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) based Power Electronic solutions that have been employed in GB to increase the Transmission network capacity and their likely role in meeting our Net Zero ambitions. He further took us to the latest FACTS application to be installed in the transmission system – modular static synchronous compensators (SSSC). Highlighted some of the emerging generic design and asset management challenges that need to be considered as more power electronic-based converter applications are used across all aspects of power system applications. He concluded his presentation by stating that the need for FACTS based power electronics solutions will play a significant role in meeting the net-zero target.

Chidinma Agwu started the presentation by taking us through the basic terminologies related to the HVDC converter station and the primary components associated with the same. She further took us through the acoustic noise levels which should be attenuated during pre & post construction and gave an insight on the existing case study examples for LCC & VSC HVDC sites. She concluded her presentation by summarising the rules and instructions to achieve a compliant station design by identifying the noise limits to avoid otherwise very expensive mitigation work, loss of revenue and fines. During the panel discussion, four presenters took several questions such as how the interconnectors are providing inertia support in the UK and some insights on potential applications of meshed DC grids and DC/DC converters in the UK. We would like to thank especially all speakers, the organising committee and all the attendees to join this event on Opportunities & Challenges for HVDC & Power Electronics in the UK.

Global Youth Engineering Climate Conference 2021

CIGRE partnered with international companies, universities, and youth groups to gather this September for a fully virtual Global Youth Engineering Climate Conference (GYECC21) hosted by National Grid – attracting students and young professionals from multiple nations to collaborate on climate challenges facing us all.

COP26-Global Youth Engineering Climate Conference was held between 7th and 8th September 2021. There were attendees and speakers from 100 different countries describing their experience and expectations from COP26, as well as the challenges and opportunities they believed do exist towards decarbonising local communities both in developed and developing countries. The event was organised by young engineers from National Grid and supported by CIGRE UK NGN. Our NGN committee member Angeliki Loukatou was delighted to be part of the event and act as a session moderator.

The event has cover a range of topics including:

Public knowledge and awareness is key (educate and protect consumers).
Decarbonisation lies in 5 main areas: power, heat, transport, aviation and agriculture.
Government policy and regulation are key towards the transition, as well as wholistic distribution of plans/actions/solutions to local communities.
Digital disruption is happening!
Energy storage is key to mitigate renewable intermittency.
RE: COP26, we need to move from ambition to accountability.
Young people should be advocates to change, get involved in STEM and governmental institutions to create and mobilise change.
Coordination of leadership between government and local institutions.
Multi-system thinking and gender diversity are required!

Let’s all be critical thinkers and action-takers towards the decarbonisation journey!

Title: ‘The evolution of FACTS applications in the GB Transmission System’

Abstract: The presentation will discuss the range of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) based Power Electronic solutions that have been employed in GB to increase the Transmission network capacity and their likely role in meeting our Net Zero ambitions. It will introduce the latest FACTS application to be installed in the transmission system – modular static synchronous compensators (SSSC) called ‘Smartvalves’ which when operated in a coordinated manner facilitate optimise the power flow control on constrained circuits to improve the overall transmission boundary capacity. The material will also highlight some of the emerging design and asset management challenges that need to be considered as more power electronics-based converter applications are used across all aspects of power system applications.

Abstract: The presentation will provide an overview of the sector market size, current trends and future outlook for HVDC and PE in the UK. It will include an analysis of technology readiness regarding multi-terminal HVDC grids, followed by a discussion on reduced inertia due to higher penetrations of power electronic interfaced generation; this will be supported by a brief case study. Finally, the key remaining challenges in power electronic integration will be summarised.

Abstract: The presentation will provide an overview of an HVDC converter station, with a focus on the primary plant. It will discuss the regulations/guidelines which will inform the noise restrictions applied to the converter stations. Finally, the presentation will highlight the acoustic noise consideration in terms of the design, modelling and operation of the HVDC converter station. Examples of some of the challenges faced at different stages of the project life cycle will also be explored.

Speaker Bios

Theodor HeathTheodor Heath received the B.Eng. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. degree from The University of Manchester, U.K., in 2015 and 2019, respectively. Both degrees were sponsored by National Grid, through the IET Power Academy, and then an EPSRC iCASE. During his PhD, Theodor designed and built a laboratory scale modular multilevel converter to investigate the impact of a distributed control architecture on internal converter communication. Between late 2019 and early 2021 Theodor worked for GE Renewable Energy as a power electronics engineer in the HVDC R&D department of Grid Solutions in Stafford, U.K. His work was on the development of next generation submodules for modular multilevel converters. As of early 2021, Theodor is now a teaching focussed lecturer in power and energy at The University of Manchester, with continued interest in VSC-HVDC.

 

IDDechao Kong is the elected UK Regular Member of CIGRE B4 Study Committee since August 2020. He is currently a Power System Engineer and the Subject-Matter Expert in DC Systems and Power Electronics in National Grid ESO, UK. Dechao has been getting heavily involved in the UK’s academia and industry since 2008, contributing his such subject-matter expertise in technical strategy & policy development, new technology & innovation, engineering and asset management in the areas of DC Systems and Power Electronics. Dechao obtained his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK. He is a Chartered Engineer and an IET member in the UK. He is also an active member with multiple roles in several CIGRE SC B4 & B5 Working Groups.

 

Mark OsborneDr. Mark Osborne is a Chartered Engineer and joined National Grid in 1997. He works in Electricity Transmission in the Engineering and Asset Management sector. Key activities include substation life-cycle design and development to incorporate new concepts in technology to meet the challenges facing the Electricity supply industry. He is active in the CIGRE B3 Substations Study Committee as a Strategic Advisory Group member, Special Reporter and UK Regular Member.

 

 

chidinma-agwu-6ee8591aChidinma Agwu graduated from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) with a Master in Engineering with Honours. She had over 10 years’ experience with GE where she was heavily involved in large LCC and VSC HVDC projects such Rio Madeira and Dolwin 3. She joined WSP in 2017 and now works as a Principle engineer within the Interconnectors team at WSP and has been involved in several HVDC Interconnector projects such as Greenlink and Aquind. Her work ranges from technical involvement in the Planning processes, to specification and design of aspects of HVDC projects, through to support work involved in operational HVDC projects. She is an active member of the IET and Cigre and was previously a committee member of the CIGRE Next Generation Network and currently the B4 Technical Panel secretary.

CIGRE UK NGN Young Member Showcase Competition 2022 – Call for Abstracts

The CIGRE Paris Session is a leading international event in the power industry, gathering worldwide experts to discuss and learn about the industry’s future. CIGRE Session 2022 will take place from 28th August to 2nd September 2022 at the Palais des congrès in Paris. It will provide delegates with the chance to showcase the latest solutions across the whole value chain, from generation to distribution.

As part of the CIGRE Session, the Young Member (YM) showcase is a unique opportunity for young professionals to present their work to leading experts from all around the world. Representatives will be selected for nomination by assessment of a full technical paper and presentation competition.

Successful candidates will have the chance to receive free conference tickets to the CIGRE Centennial Paris Session 2021 and a bursary for transport and accommodation. 2021’s YM Showcase Competition saw three UK competition winners receive free conference tickets to the virtual sessions and presented to various panels.

The NGN Committee of CIGRE UK National Committee are delighted to invite NGN members to prepare and submit their abstracts of proposed presentations for the upcoming 2022 Session to the Technical Team Lead, Max McFarlane (technical@cigre-ngn-uk.org), by 17th September 2021.

Topics for abstracts/papers/presentations need to align with one of the 16 CIGRE Study Committees. Abstracts will be scored on technical content, relevance to the selected Study Committee, and presentation of the material (structure, figures, etc.). Papers will be scored on novelty, definition of the problem, robustness, quality of writing etc.

This year, we’ll look to invite shortlisted candidates to submit a full paper, by 19th November 2021.

Lastly, the final shortlisted candidates will be invited to take part in the showcase presentation competition. More details will be released at a later date.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to give a 10-min virtual presentation to a panel of senior CIGRE-UK members and an audience of NGN members at the presentation competition event. The presentation competition will be in the middle of January 2022. Please check the CIGRE monthly newsletters for updates on the competition date.

Bo Lei, vice-chair of NGN China, Researcher/ Project Manager, EPRI of China Southern Power Grid (CSG), and Dr. James Hill, Policy Manager for Electricity System Operation at Ofgem, shared their insights on Net Zero in the UK and the China – Challenges & Opportunities through an online webinar on 28th May 2021.

The event is attended by Dr. Ying Xue, Chair of CIGRE UK NGN, Assistant Professor in Electrical Power Networks at the University of Birmingham, Ciara Ritson-Courtney, Secretary & Treasurer of CIGRE UK NGN, Electrical Engineer, GHD, Dr. Melike Selcen Ayaz, event lead at CIGRE UK NGN, Energy Consultant at RINA TECH UK. Over 50 people were attending the event.

The webinar is organised by the CIGRE UK & China NGN, chaired by Ciara, Secretary & Treasurer of CIGRE UK NGN, Electrical Engineer, GHD, and hosted by the Zoom platform.

At the start of the event, Ciara provided an opening remark and welcomed all the attendees.

Lin Wang introduced the China NGN, highlighting its past events and CIGRE China themes for 2020/21.

Ciara introduced the UK NGN, highlighting its past events, young member showcase, and mentoring scheme.

Bo Lei gave a brief introduction of EPRI, CSG followed by an overview of targets set for net zero by China, followed by analysing the challenges in terms of fluctuating and unpredictable nature of variable renewable energies, effects of Power Electronics Equipment in affecting the fault characteristics.

Next, he briefly gave a possible technical approach/solution with the help of Energy coming offshore, VSC-HVDC Technology transmission with a distance of over 10km – 120 km, better optimization of transmission using VSC solution & Hybrid valve topology, room for storage and finally discussed the solution for distribution and end user by usage of Distribution network, DC buildings & Data centre.

Dr. James hill gave an introduction about the Ofgem, about the net zero target of UK, what does net zero system looks like currently with a promising future of utilising the good wind resources & decarbonisation of all sectors.

Next, he touched upon the progress GB has made in electricity system in the aspect of net zero with emphasis on wind, solar and low carbon intensity, followed the generation mix of UK power system and what needs to be done or planned as part of Ofgem forward programme.

He then elaborated on Low carbon infrastructure, full chain flexibility, data & digitalization, wholesale markets & energy system governance.

He pointed out that the major challenges in achieving the net zero are around converting the coal emission to net zero, followed by uncertainty, inertia, response & reserve energy, generation – demand profile matching, products & planning.

During the panel discussion, the two presenters took several questions such as the role of nuclear resources for net zero in the UK, possible challenges of climatic condition for achieving net zero in China & how to overcome the same.

Speech I – Technical approaches to be considered for net-zero

China has committed to realize carbon emission peak at 2030 and then net zero emissions by 2060. It is a big challenge for the electric power system. This presentation provides some ponderation over the challenges that will be brought to generation, transmission, distribution and user-end and the possible technical approaches needed. And some current status and prospects of these technical approaches are shared based on Chinese research and engineering application experience.

Bo Lei received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Hunan University, Changsha, P.R.China, both in Electrical Engineering, in 2011 and 2014, respectively. After graduation, he joined EPRI of China Southern Power Grid (CSG) in Guangzhou and worked as a researcher on Energy Storage and Power Electronics of HVDC and Power Electronics department. He is entitled vice chair of NGN China Committee in 2020. After leading several demonstration projects of applying Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in several different grid scenarios and drafting an IEEE P2030.2.1 guide for them, he is now working on the system design of 25MWh-level second-use EV BESS and project plan to realize GWh-level large high-voltage BESS to facilitate Net-zero Target of energy development with more renewable energies.

Speech II – Considerations on a journey to Net Zero

The UK has committed into law attainment of net zero emissions by 2050 and is one of the most ambitious nations in terms of target setting, including the recently announced intention to reduce emissions by 78% of 1990 levels by 2035. This presentation covers some of the key actors involved and actions needed for this stretching target to be realised, with focus on the GB power system. The challenge of achieving carbon intensity reduction also presents opportunities to many market participants, and some of these will be covered in this session too.

Dr James Hill first graduated from The University of Manchester, UK in 2013 with a M.Eng in Chemical Engineering. He worked as a process engineer at a food and drink production site and as a process design engineer at an oil and gas EPC. During this time, he was a contributing author to a book on carbon capture and storage. In 2016, James began a PhD in Power Systems, returning to The University of Manchester (as part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training programme in Power Networks). His research focused on transformer insulation failure and protection of assets affected by electrification of the power network. His work contributed to the Transformer Research Consortium project. He published 5 peer-reviewed papers on this topic, and spent 3 months studying and collaborating at Tsinghua University, China. Throughout his PhD, James held positions on the CIGRE UK NGN and IEEE PES UoM SBC committees. Since completing his studies, James has been working as a Policy Manager for Electricity System Operation at Ofgem.

Researchers from UK & Netherlands share their research on the impact of COVID-19 on electrical power systems

Dr Mathaios Panteli, Assistant Professor at University of Cyprus, Dr Matthias Noebels, Ph.D. researcher at the University of Manchester and Mr Jan Vorrink, head of the Control Centres Netherlands of TenneT TSO BV (the Dutch Transmission System Operator), shared their insights on the impact of COVID-19 on electrical power systems through an online webinar on 29th March 2021.

The event is attended by Mr Harish Krishnappa, Chair of CIGRE Netherlands NGN, Dr Luis Hurtado, member of CIGRE Netherlands NGN, Process Specialist at TenneT, Dr. Ying Xue, Chair of CIGRE UK NGN, Assistant Professor in Electrical Power Networks at the University of Birmingham, Dr Melike Selcen Ayaz, event lead at CIGRE UK NGN, Energy Consultant at RINA TECH UK and Ms. Jingyi Wan, UK representative of NGN International Executive Committee and Marketing Lead at CIGRE UK NGN, HV Cable Systems Project Engineer at Mott MacDonald. There were over 50 people attending the event.

Mathaios first introduced the growing need for resilience, the concept of high-impact low-probability event and the resilience definition from CIGRE WG C4.47. Following that, he pointed out the importance of organizational resilience, in addition to infrastructure and operational resilience.

Matthias then presented a data-driven resilience assessment method of the UK electricity network during COVID-19 using publicly available outage data, highlighting correlations with demand levels, various social metrics and geographical locations. He pointed out the importance of resilience-driven investment.

Following Matthias, Mathaios highlighted the importance of considering community resilience in a move from energy trilemma to energy quadrilemma. He concluded by pointing out the need for data-driven approaches and importance of resilience-driven investment.

Jan started off his presentation with a brief introduction to Tennet. He pointed out a number of important impacts on electricity system from COVID-19 such as decreased of load, occasionally very low prices when PV/Wind have high production and voltage/inertia problems. He then shared a number of measures that were taken by Tennet to mitigate these impacts and its press release. After that, Jan explained in detail an example of COPA team risk assessments, causal chains of grid operation and monitoring factors in case scenarios materialise.

During the panel discussion, the three presenters took a number of questions such as the cyber security during remote working, what are the key lessons learnt from COVID-19 and the impacts of COVID-19 on the economy of power system.

Researchers from UK & Italy share their research on Resiliency of Grid

Dr Luigi Calcara, member of CIGRE Italy NGN, Assistant Professor of Power Systems at University “La Sapienza” and Dr Alejandro Martínez Ceseña (Alex), academic fellow in multi-energy systems at The University of Manchester, shared their research outcomes on Resiliency of Grid through an online webinar on 19th March 2021. The event is attended by Mr Marco Forteleoni, Chair of CIGRE Italy NGN and Dr. Ying Xue, Chair of CIGRE UK NGN. There were over 130 people attending the event.

Luigi first explained the key definitions of power system resilience and highlighted initiatives taken by the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment (ARERA) on improving network resilience. He then introduced in detail the impacts of heat waves on MV underground cables and highlighted various methods that can be taken to improve the resiliency.

Alex started off his presentation by explaining the increasing levels of uncertainty coming from distributed energy resources and extreme weather events. He then introduced various methods in assessing system resilience and highlighted the definition of resilience by CIGRE WG C4.47. Finally, he explains the techno-economic modelling in particular for High-Impact Low-Probability (HILP) events and discussed potential investment options to improve network resilience.

During the final round table discussion, the two presenters took a number of questions such as the definition of flexibility, impact of high fault currents and longer short-circuit events on resilience and who should decide and pay for network resilience.

Speech I – Lessons learnt from the COVID-19 Pandemic: How Resilient Are We?

The Covid-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to our power networks, making us rethink and re-evaluate our understanding of power grid resilience. In this talk, Matthias Noebels and Mathaios Panteli will share their experiences on understanding, defining and assessing power grid resilience, highlighting the need to consider organisational resilience during unexpected events like pandemics. They will also present a data-driven resilience assessment of the UK electricity network during the Covid-19 pandemic using publicly available outage data from UK distribution network operators, shedding light on how resilient we really are to cope with severe network stresses and shocks.

Matthias NoebelsMatthias Noebels received the M.Sc. degree in Physics from the University of Konstanz, Germany, in 2015. He is currently in his final year of his Ph.D. degree at the Centre for Doctoral Training in Power Networks at The University of Manchester. His expertise lies in resilience analysis of power networks as well as developing strategies that can enhance resilience in case of natural hazards such as extreme weather.

 

Mathaios PanteliMathaios Panteli received the M.Eng. degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2009, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical power engineering from The University of Manchester, U.K., in 2013. He was a Lecturer in Resilient, Low-Carbon Energy Systems at The University of Manchester until Dec. 2020, before moving to University of Cyprus as an Assistant Professor in Jan. 2021. Mathaios is an IEEE Senior Member, an IET Chartered Engineer (CEng), the co-chair of the CIGRE WG C4.47 “Power System Resilience” and an active member of multiple IEEE working groups. He is also the recipient of the prestigious 2018 Newton Prize.

 

Speech II – Impact of COVID on electrical power system and the organisation of TenneT

The COVID-19 Pandemic had several significant effects on the Electrical Power system and the TSO in Europe. The presentation will give an overview of these effects and the mitigating measures that the TSO’s applied. It will explain the organisational measures and the coordination between the TSO’s and within the TSO.

Jan VorrinkJan Vorrink is the head of the Control Centres Netherlands of TenneT TSO BV which is the Dutch Transmission System Operator. Mr. Vorrink has graduated as a Master in Business Administration and is an Engineer. He is working for Ten-neT since 2002 as a Manager in several departments. The activities of his de-partment include the operational Planning processes, Realtime processes and the balancing and settlement processes.

Abstracts

Heatwaves effects on MV electrical grid – In the last years, the frequency and the intensity of adverse meteorological conditions are on the rise and climate changes have the potential to affect negatively the electrical systems in many different ways. Local or extended electrical outages have been and are caused by extremely severe negative meteorological events of different nature, like strong winds, wet snow, heavy rain, and heatwaves. Of course, such interruptions of electrical systems affect also critical infrastructures with a negative impact on all human and industrial activities. To face this reality, the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment (ARERA), established new more stringent rules to maintain high standards of power quality services also through a more resilient electrical system. For this reason, there have been established very ambitious benchmark values for the key performance indicators, normally used to evaluate the quality of electric service. With the aim to increase the resilience of the distribution electrical networks, the DSOs are studying and developing new grid operations with improved assets adopting also advanced electrical technologies. In particular, the medium voltage joints are currently one of the components which require more attention: in fact, they make the system more vulnerable due to possible imperfections introduced during the construction phase both for unperfect manpower and for the complexity of the operations.

Techno-economic modeling and assessment of forward resilience measures – The importance of developing resilience energy systems is attracting research interest due to the recent climate change-driven extreme weather events experienced in different parts of the world. For example, in the UK, Ofgem (the network regulator) has highlighted the importance of considering resilience when developing the power system. However, as resilience is still an emerging topic, there are no standardised metrics and methodologies to quantify resilience and include it in operation and planning practices. This presentation provides an overview of the latest research from The University of Manchester which aims to address these research gaps. To be more specific, the key differences between classical reliability and resilience studies will be presented. The adequacy of different metrics and approaches used to quantify resilience will also be discussed. Proposed approaches to simulate the impacts of extreme events such as wind storms and floods will then be explored in the context of smart systems in urban areas and off-grid systems in isolated locations. The effectiveness of different resilience measures, such as asset hardening and the use of system flexibility, will be discussed in different contexts.

Dr. Luigi CalcaraLuigi Calcara – Luigi Calcara (1990) received (2015) the Master Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Roma “La Sapienza”. Part of his thesis was supported by Enel Distribuzione with a training stage developing the work titled “Advanced systems for temperature monitoring to reduce the rate of failures of electric distribution lines in underground medium voltage cables”. This contribution was honoured (2016) by the CEI Award as one of the Best Italian Master Degree Thesis.  In 2020 he received his PhD degree, with the valuation with honours, at the University of Roma “La Sapienza” developing a work thesis on the subject of Electrical Resilience: Technological Aspects.  From 2020 he is Contract Professor of “Electric Components” for Electrical Engineering Master Degree at the University of Roma “La Sapienza”. From 2021 he is Assistant Professor at the same University. He was the Technical Program Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Dielectric Liquids 2019 (IEEE DEI Society). From 2018 he is member of the local organizing committee of the annual IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering. In 2017 he was Co-Guest Editor of the ELSEVIER Electric Power System Research Journal for the Special Issue on Advances in HV Systems. He also served and is still serving the IEEE DEI Society as Co-Guest Editor of two subsequent Special Issues (2018 and 2020) on Liquid Dielectrics of the Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulations. From 2016 he is member of CEI CT10 and IEC TC 10 “Fluids for electrotechnical applications”.  Up to 2020 he was chair of the IEEE Sapienza Student Branch. Currently, he is President of the Roma Youth Section of the Electrical Italian Association (AEIT).  He is CIGRE D1 Italian Representative Secretary (Materials and Emerging Test Techniques) and member of the CIGRE D1.68 “Natural and synthetic esters – Evaluation of the performance under fire and the impact on environment.

 

Dr Eduardo Alejandro Martínez Ceseña is an academic fellow in multi-energy systems at The University of Manchester. His research interests include business case assessment, decision making under uncertainty, and modelling of resilient integrated electricity/heat/gas systems. He has co-authored over 50 research papers in high-ranking journals and international conferences, and has participated in over a dozen UK and international research projects; currently leading a 10 researchers team and holding ~£1.5M in active research projects. He is also is a member of CIGRE C6/C1.33, Multi-Energy Systems, and the secretary of CIGRE C6/C2.34, Flexibility provision from distributed energy resources.

CIGRE UK NGN Young Members Showcase – The Winners

The NGN Committee of CIGRE UK hosted an online presentation competition on 5th February 2021 to select the best UK young professionals to present at the upcoming CIGRE Centennial Paris Session in August 2021. The Paris Session includes a Young Member (YM) showcase for young professionals to present their contributions to CIGRE’s domains of work before an audience of leading experts from all around the world.

The NGN steering committee assessed abstracts and invited seven candidates to present their work at the presentation competition. Each presentation was judged by a panel of four senior CIGRE UK members, including Dr. Diptargha Chakravorty, Dr. Qiteng Hong, John Wright, and Dr. Konstantinos Kopsidas. Winners of the competition were nominated to attend the 2021 Centennial Paris Session and receive free tickets and a bursary towards travel if approved by the international CIGRE NGN committee.

Harry Evans1

Harry Evans, graduate electrical engineer at GHD, for their presentation entitled “Boston Spa Energy Efficiency Trial.”

Bio: Harry is a consultant electrical engineer working within GHD’s Energy team. During his time at the company, he has worked on a range of projects covering: SMART grid design of distribution networks; power systems modelling of generation connections; and he has co-authored a review into emerging transmission technologies. Harry has gained experience outside of his role at GHD in the development of fault level calculation code for application in offshore wind farm design software, and a continuing role as a contributing member to CIGRE WG B4.89.

Synopsis:What if a relatively small change at a substation level could reduce the regions carbon emissions and shrink customer bills? NPGs voltage optimisation trial in the town of Boston Spa is hoping to achieve just that. This presentation covers the initial stages of the project, which investigated static optimisation of substation voltages, and how customer smart meter data can be used to monitor and control the network more efficiently.

 

Rui Jing1Dr. Rui Jing, research associate at Cardiff University, for their presentation entitled “Planning extreme weather resilient urban energy systems.”

Bio:Dr. Rui Jing is a Research Associate in Cardiff University working with Prof. Nick Jenkins and Prof. Jianzhong Wu. His research focuses on multi-energy system modelling, urban energy transition, climate resilience energy systems, and energy-related nexus research. He got a Ph.D. from Xiamen University, China in 2019. He also has visiting experience in Imperial College London (2018-2019), research experience in the Chinese Academy of Science (2019-2020), and industry experience in energy auditing consultancy (2013-2015). So far, he has more than 20 journal publications, and the H-index is 11. He is also active in academic activities, e.g. acting as session chair for international conferences and serving as reviewers for more than 10 journals. He was recognized for several best paper awards and several outstanding reviewer awards.

Synopsis:Global climate change leads to more frequent and intense extreme weather events, such as typhoons, heatwaves, and rainstorms, which has posed serious risks for urban energy systems. Without preparation for such risks, the city administrators can only hope the next extreme weather event would not trigger a sudden blackout. Therefore, we propose an original planning model to design a ‘climate-resilient’ urban energy system and bridge the gap of addressing extreme weathers during energy system planning. The case study reveals that by investing an acceptable extra 3-5% could help design  a  ‘climate-resilient’ urban energy system.

 

Caleb Waler1Caleb Walker, graduate engineer at Scottish Power, for their presentation entitled “Accurate Prediction of Transformer Residual Life.”

Bio: Having graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a First BEng in Electrical Power Engineering in 2020, I am currently employed as a graduate engineer with SP Energy Networks.

Synopsis: The ageing process of power transformers is a complex mechanism, which means condition and health assessment of these critical assets is a challenging task. While transformers are in-service, obtaining insulating paper samples from the windings for direct analysis cannot easily be achieved, meaning the only practical way of assessing the state of degradation of the paper insulation is through prediction models. A new prediction method is currently being developed using Post-Mortem reports to give a more accurate estimate of the remaining useful life of transformers compared to existing methods, thus avoiding costly interventions or replacement of these high value assets.

 

Shuren WangDr. Shuren Wang, research associate at the University of Strathclyde, for their presentation entitled “A T-Type Modular Multilevel Converter (T-MMC) to Improve System Security.”

Bio: Shuren Wang is a researcher of the Electronic & Electrical Engineering Department at University of Strathclyde. He received the B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. (Distinguished) degrees from Yangzhou University, China, and the Ph.D. degree from University of Strathclyde, U.K.. His current research interests include power conversion, power electronics, MVDC, HVDC, and energy storage systems.

Synopsis: Power electronic converters are enabling massive integration of renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, system security and fault resiliency are increasingly concerned. A T-Type Modular Multilevel Converter (T-MMC) using state-of-the-art power electronic technology will be presented for bulk ac-dc power conversion applications. The salient features of the proposed T-MMC include: (1) resiliency against ac and dc faults; (2) effective ac grid support; (3) high operation efficiency; (4) flexible and efficient energy storage integration; (5) uninterruptable power flow during faults with the integrated energy storage.

Diptargha Chakravorty

Dr Diptargha Chakravorty is a Principal Consultant with TNEI Services. He is an electrical engineer with over 8 years of experience in the power industry, including a 4-year Ph.D. on system stability from Imperial College London. He is involved in several innovation projects in the UK and abroad and maintains a close collaboration with Imperial College. He takes an active interest in Cigre activities and is currently a member of C4.41 and B4.92 working groups.

Qiteng Hong

Dr Qiteng Hong is presently a Chancellor’s Fellow (Lecturer) in the at the University of Strathclyde in the UK. His research focus is on novel solutions for protection and control of future power systems with high penetrations of renewable energy sources. Dr Hong received his BEng (Hons) degree in EEE from Strathclyde and was the top graduate of the year in 2011. He received his PhD on power system protection also from Strathclyde in 2015. Dr Hong is a Regular Member in the CIGRE Working Group (WG) B5.50 and a member of IEEE WG P2004; he was the Technical Lead at the CIGRE UK Next Generation Network between 2016-2020 and occupied the position of Honorary Secretary for the IET Scotland South West Committee until 2018; he was also the main founder and led the Global Young Member Showcase in CIGRE Paris Sessions in 2016 and 2018.

John Wright

Since graduating from Staffordshire University with an Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering I have worked in the Protection and Control Industry for nearly 30 years. I`m a Chartered Engineer and an IET & GE Fellow

During this period I have held positions such as, Principal Technical Applications and Commissioning Engineer supporting a global customer base, Business Development and Innovation Manager, Engineering & Service Manager, Commercial Key Account Manager and EHS Technical Safety Advisor.

I`m presently Regional Leader for Technical Applications Engineering and Product Growth for GE Grid Automation Business – for Europe, SSA and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Countries.

I have been involved in Cigre for over 15 years; at a technical working group level, supporting the UK Executive Committee, B5 Technical Panel Secretary and Special Reporter for Paris Session. I`m currently regular member for B5 in the UK and Chair of the UK B5 Technical Panel.

Konstantinos Kopsidas

Dr Konstantinos Kopsidas (MIET, CEng, SMIEE, FHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Power Engineering and the Director of the MSc in Electrical Power Systems Engineering in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Manchester, UK. His research focuses on electrical power network component design aspects and operation strategies to improve networks’ resilience and flexibility. He is expert in the area of overhead lines and underground cables design modelling and reliability/security assessments and he is/has been actively involved with on several EPSRC, EU and industrial projects. He was/is the convener of CIGRE WG C4.25, member of the IEEE EMF Grid Codes TaskForce, and newly formed IEEE Metrics for Resilience TaskForce, a consultant for several national and international activities (UKPN, Mott Macdonald, Balfour Beatty, CEATI) and a member of advisory boards of EU projects (Grid4EU), Quality assurance organisations (H.Q.A.A.) and industry (ECOFYS). Dr Kopsidas has published more than 50 research papers and reports and has been delivering CPD courses and technical seminars in the area of overhead line design and modelling, and reliability assessments in industry and academia.

Rui Jing – Planning Extreme Weather Resilient Urban Energy Systems

Rui Jing1Bio: Dr. Rui Jing is a Research Associate in Cardiff University working with Prof. Nick Jenkins and Prof. Jianzhong Wu. His research focuses on multi-energy system modelling, urban energy transition, climate resilience energy systems, and energy-related nexus research. He got a Ph.D. from Xiamen University, China in 2019. He also has visiting experience in Imperial College London (2018-2019), research experience in the Chinese Academy of Science (2019-2020), and industry experience in energy auditing consultancy (2013-2015). So far, he has more than 20 journal publications, and the H-index is 11. He is also active in academic activities, e.g. acting as session chair for international conferences and serving as reviewers for more than 10 journals. He was recognized for several best paper awards and several outstanding reviewer awards.

Synopsis: Global climate change leads to more frequent and intense extreme weather events, such as typhoons, heatwaves, and rainstorms, which has posed serious risks for urban energy systems. Without preparation for such risks, the city administrators can only hope the next extreme weather event would not trigger a sudden blackout. Therefore, we propose an original planning model to design a ‘climate-resilient’ urban energy system and bridge the gap of addressing extreme weathers during energy system planning. The case study reveals that by investing an acceptable extra 3-5% could help design  a  ‘climate-resilient’ urban energy system.

 

Bilal Amjad – Active Distribution Network Planning with distributed Renewable Energy Resources Considering Contingency Analysis

Bilal AmjadBio: Mr Bilal Amjad is a postgraduate researcher at the University of Huddersfield, UK. His main research area is renewable energy resources, power systems, smart grids and data analytics. He has completed MSc in Smart Grids and Energy Systems, with Distinction Award, from the University of Bradford. As a part of MSc programme, he worked on a research project, called Pi – CREST (Planning, integration and Control of mini-grids with Renewables and Energy STorage), funded by Innovate UK withthe collaboration of the University of Bradford, Bayero University, Kano, Nortech Management Ltd, and Renewable Energy Agency, Africa. In this project, he worked on the planning of an active distribution network with high penetration of renewables and contingency analysis. Before his masters, he worked as a trainee lab engineer at the University of Gujrat.

Mr Bilal is a member of the UN Major Group for Children and Youth (UN MGCY), European Energy Centre (EEC),IEEE, IET, CIGRE UK NGN. He is also involved in many voluntary activities. Currently, he is engaged with Digital4Foundation as an Event Manager Assistant to organise World Digital Weeks 2021 which includes 5 Continental Digital Weeks (each week includes 15 specialized conferences related to different professional areas), European e-Commerce and Digital Marketing Week and Bulgarian Digital Week. He is also a member of SDG7 Youth Constituency and involved in SDG7 Africa Advocacy and Capacity Building Project organised by our Regional Focal Points for Africa.

Synopsis: This research work is part of Pi-CREST (Planning, integration and Control of mini-grids with Renewables and Energy Storage) project, funded by Innovate UK with the collaboration of the University of Bradford, Bayero University, Kano, Nortech Management Ltd, and Renewable Energy Agency, Africa. The project aims to enable access to cleaner, low cost and sustainable energy to unserved and underserved regions across sub-Saharan Africa, starting with Nigeria.

The main contributions are this work are:

  1. Study the integration and operation of RERs and their impact on the electrical distribution network and investigate different ANM schemes and network planning techniques.
  2. Implement and analyse network planning problem on a particular distribution network, with ANM and without ANM, considering different scenarios.
  3. Analyse network security under N-1 line contingency for all scenarios under the whole planning period.

 

Caleb Walker – Accurate Prediction of Transformer Residual Life

Caleb Waler1Bio: Having graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a First BEng in Electrical Power Engineering in 2020, I am currently employed as a graduate engineer with SP Energy Networks.

 

 

Synopsis: The ageing process of power transformers is a complex mechanism, which means condition and health assessment of these critical assets is a challenging task. While transformers are in-service, obtaining insulating paper samples from the windings for direct analysis cannot easily be achieved, meaning the only practical way of assessing the state of degradation of the paper insulation is through prediction models. A new prediction method is currently being developed using Post-Mortem reports to give a more accurate estimate of the remaining useful life of transformers compared to existing methods, thus avoiding costly interventions or replacement of these high value assets.

 

Harry Evans – Boston Spa Energy Efficiency Trial (BEET)

Harry Evans1Bio: Harry is a consultant electrical engineer working within GHD’s Energy team. During his time at the company, he has worked on a range of projects covering: SMART grid design of distribution networks; power systems modelling of generation connections; and he has co-authored a review into emerging transmission technologies. Harry has gained experience outside of his role at GHD in the development of fault level calculation code for application in offshore wind farm design software, and a continuing role as a contributing member to CIGRE WG B4.89.

Synopsis: What if a relatively small change at a substation level could reduce the regions carbon emissions and shrink customer bills? NPGs voltage optimisation trial in the town of Boston Spa is hoping to achieve just that. This presentation covers the initial stages of the project, which investigated static optimisation of substation voltages, and how customer smart meter data can be used to monitor and control the network more efficiently.

Mohamed Ahmed Numair – IoT-based Demand Side Management of a Renewable Energy Powered Smart Microgrid

Mohamed Ahmed Numair1Bio: Mohamed Numair received his B.Sc. in Electrical Power Engineering from Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt, in 2019. He is currently pursuing his M.Sc. thesis in the demand side management of smart grids using the Internet of Things (IoT). He has just completed some modules from MSc Smart Grids and Energy Systems, University of Bradford, UK, as an Erasmus exchange student. He is also currently working as a research assistant at the high voltage and superconductivity laboratory, Tanta University. Where he is building an Internet of Things Innovation laboratory. His research interests include Smart Grids, Renewable Energy, Internet of Things (IoT) and Energy Management.

Synopsis: For the past few decades we have noticed global efforts into a green and sustainable energy system. Examples of these efforts are increasing the renewable generation share of the total generation and increasing the efficiency of the power system and its equipment. But both of those solutions always faced a limitation like hosting capacity (HC) which represents the limit at which the current power system can accept renewable generation. Also the aging power systems equipment always stood as a hindrance in front of a sustainable grid. That’s why climate change and other technical and economic issues were always ahead of these renovation efforts. In this presentation we will discuss the role of the 4thindustrial revolution and its related technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data (BD) in accelerating the renovation of the current legacy grid into the smart energy grids of the future.

 

Shuren Wang – A T-Type Modilar Multilevel Converter (T-MMC) to Improve System Security

Shuren WangBio: Shuren Wang is a researcher of the Electronic & Electrical Engineering Department at University of Strathclyde. He received the B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. (Distinguished) degrees from Yangzhou University, China, and the Ph.D. degree from University of Strathclyde, U.K.. His current research interests include power conversion, power electronics, MVDC, HVDC, and energy storage systems.

 

Synopsis: Power electronic converters are enabling massive integration of renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, system security and fault resiliency are increasingly concerned. A T-Type Modular Multilevel Converter (T-MMC) using state-of-the-art power electronic technology will be presented for bulk ac-dc power conversion applications. The salient features of the proposed T-MMC include: (1) resiliency against ac and dc faults; (2) effective ac grid support; (3) high operation efficiency; (4) flexible and efficient energy storage integration; (5) uninterruptable power flow during faults with the integrated energy storage.

 

Jiabin Fan – Three-phase OPF Based Demand Response for Managing Unbalanced Voltage under High Renewable Energy Scenarios

Jiabin FanBio: Jiabin Fan received first class undergraduate degree from University of Strathclyde in electricity and electrical engineering department in 2018. He is currently working toward the PhD degree under the supervision with Dr. Ivana Kockar and he is the University John Anderson Research Award Studentship recipient. His research interests include optimal operation of distribution system, modelling DERs and local flexibility market.

 

Synopsis: With the increasing penetration level of renewable energy sources (RES) in distribution systems, there is an increased risk for occurrence of a three-phase voltage unbalance which could exceed security standard. This presentation introduces a method which seek to utilize the active domestic load response to provide flexibility services for distribution system operators (DSOs) which can also help balance the three-phase voltage. The analyses assume that the flexibility providers can receive economic compensation according to their contribution to their provision of flexibility services

Researchers from CIGRE UK & Austria NGN share their research on Lightning Phenomena and Power System Transients

Dr Lukas Schwalt, Post-Doc Researcher at Graz University of Technology, and Dr Diptargha Chakravorty, vice chair of CIGRE UK NGN and Senior Consultant with TNEI Services, shared their research outcomes on Lightning Phenomena and Power System Transients through an online webinar on 12th November 2020. There were over 90 people attending the event.

The webinar is organised by the CIGRE UK & Austria NGN and hosted by the University of Birmingham Zoom platform.

The webinar was chaired by Ying Xue, Secretary & Treasurer of CIGRE UK NGN, Lecturer in Electrical Power Networks in the University of Birmingham. He introduced CIGRE UK NGN and key past events including the Young Member Showcase competition.

Manuel Galler, chair of CIGRE Austria NGN, introduced the establishment of Austria NGN in 2019 and the election of Austrian NGN Committee in March 2020. He further introduced key activities that Austria NGN was involved or organized in the past year and its future activities in 2021.

As the first speaker, Dr Lukas Schwalt first explained the general lightning characteristics with an emphasis on the Cloud-to-Ground (CG) Flash. He then introduced in detail his work of on-site measurements of CG flashes, where he showed the equipment he used and video and field records at different locations in the Austrian Alpine region. He further presented the correlation and analysis of Video and Filed Recording System (VFRS) and Lightning Location System (LLS) data.

Dr Diptargha Chakravorty started off his presentation by introducing the innovation competition project ‘Distributed ReStart’ and the motivation for using Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to support system restoration. He the introduced the details of the test network that he used and arrangements of the case studies to assess the impact of different factors (e.g., energisation voltage and point on wave switching) on the unbalance and over-voltage in the system. He concluded his presentation by summarizing the key findings from the case studies.

Lightning Phenomena in the Alpine Region of Austria – Lukas Schwalt

In the first part of this presentation, an introduction about thunderstorm formation and lightning physics will be given and secondly the key findings of Dr. Schwalt’s PhD thesis “Lightning Phenomena in the Alpine Region of Austria” will be presented. The motivation for the PhD thesis was to gather lightning ground truth data for Austria out of on-site measurements, because this area shows high lightning activity. For this purpose, real processes of cloud-to-ground flashes were recorded with a high-speed video camera and an electric field measurement system. Analyses of this exclusive data set provide insights about lightning characteristics in general and for the alpine region in particular.

 

Effect of Network Parameters on the Transient Over-Voltage Phenomenon During System Restoration – Diptargha Chakravorty

System restoration is currently a transmission-led approach of starting large conventional generators with self-start capability and energising a skeleton network. Increasingly, transmission connected fossil-fuelled generators are decommissioned around the world to meet the emissions targets. This makes it imperative to explore the possibility of using distribution connected DERs to support the whole system restoration.  However, energisation of network elements such as circuits and transformers pose significant challenges such as switching transients, Temporary Over Voltage (TOV) etc which can reduce the available options to restore a network and lead to a higher number of circuit breaker switching to avoid damaging equipment. This presentation will discuss the impact of different network parameters such as the strength of the system, saturation characteristic of transformers etc on the TOV and ways to manage it during restoration.

 

Speakers:

Lukas Schwalt is a CIGRE NGN AT member and he is a Post-Doc researcher at Graz University of Technology, Institute of High Voltage Engineering and Systems Performance. After completing his master in Electrical Engineering at Vienna University of Technology, he successfully defended his PhD thesis “Lightning Phenomena in the Alpine Region of Austria” at Graz University of Technology in 2019. His main areas of research include cloud-to-ground lightning, measurements of lightning discharges, performance of lightning detection systems, lightning protection concepts and transient voltages on power lines. He is also involved in the Austrian Association for Electrical Engineering in the field of lightning protection, CIGRE B2 and C4 and served as the technical secretary for „CIGRE International Colloquium on Lightning and Power Systems ICLPS 2019” in Delft, Netherlands. He was awarded the “Young Scientist Award” at the International Conference of Lightning Protection ICLP in 2018.

Dr Diptargha Chakravorty is a Senior Consultant with TNEI Services. He is an electrical engineer with over 8 years of experience in the power industry, including a 4-year PhD on the impact of demand response on system stability from Imperial College London. He specialises in modelling and analysis of transmission and distribution networks and automation of system studies. His core expertise includes stability analysis, grid integration of renewable energy and power electronics converter control. He is currently the vice-chair of the Cigre UK NGN steering committee.

Rob Stephen, President of CIGRE, previously master specialist for T&D technologies at Eskom and Adam Middleton, chair of CIGRE UK, CEO at Siemens Energy B.V., shared their insights on energy challenges and opportunities with young engineers through an online webinar on 19th August 2020. There were about 70 people attending the event.

The webinar is the first session of Birmingham Power Systems Young Professionals Seminar Series, organised by the CIGRE UK NGN (Next Generation Network) and hosted by the University of Birmingham. The Theme for the webinar is Global and UK Energy Challenges and Opportunities for Young Members.

Jingyi Wan, Chair of CIGRE UK NGN, cable system specialist at Mott MacDonald, in her opening address introduced CIGRE, CIGRE Paris and key benefits of joining the CIGRE NGN, including her journey with CIGRE Young Member Showcase and CIGRE Paris.

Professor Xiao-Ping Zhang, Chair in Electrical Power Systems, Director of Smart Grid at the University of Birmingham, gave an opening address. He welcomed two very distinguished speakers Dr Rob Stephen, President of CIGRE and Mr Adam Middleton Chairman of CIGRE UK. Also welcome all the participants to take the time to join this webinar.

Prof Zhang then highlighted the Energy research at Birmingham including smart grids, HVDC and FACTS, renewable energy control, energy storage, energy materials, transport, and energy policies. Prof Zhang mentioned that Birmingham is a great city very much related to the 1st industrial energy revolution, i.e., triggered by the development of commercial steam engines by James Watt in Birmingham in 1776. In recent years, Birmingham was named as the National Energy ‘Capital’. This would certainly encourage exciting low carbon energy technology developments as well as international collaborations.  Finally, he pointed out that the energy challenges could not be tackled by a single country alone. International collaborations become essential for successfully implementing the Paris agreement on Climate Change. CIGRE is certainly an excellent platform to facilitate international collaborations, propose innovative smart grid solutions and support individual career developments.

Rob Stephen first highlighted the conflicting nature between ‘high reliability and security of supply’, ‘most economical solution’ and ‘best environmental protection’ aspects of power system. Rob then introduced the CIGRE’s technical activities (16 Study Committees, around 230 Working Groups with over 3800 experts from all over the world) and the structure of CIGRE. He then moved on to share his view on the challenges and opportunities from an extensive range of power system aspects, including active distribution networks, massive exchange of information, integration of HVDC/power electronics, significant installation of storage, new systems operations /controls, new concepts for protection, new concepts in planning, new tools for technical performance, increased use of existing infrastructure and new T&D developments and stakeholder awareness. Finally he highlighted the Power to Gas technology as the ‘Next Disruptor’, the potential of ‘e-Hydrogen Future Network’ and the grand vision of North Sea Wind Power Hub.  During Q&A session, he explained how CIGRE Steering Committee interacts with Technical Council and provided advice to young professionals on how to get involved in CIGRE and engage with the wider power community.

Adam Middleton started off his presentation on his understanding of global megatrends – Decarbonization, Decentralization, Digitalization, Demand Growth and Diversity of Solutions. Adam highlighted the importance of considering effectiveness, sustainability of solutions, societal acceptability, and the need to act now to tackle the challenge. He also pointed out that the key to energy transition is ‘about how we get there and the only way we get there is to start with what we have’. He moved on to share his view of the impact of COVID-19 by adding new volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity to energy transition. He mentioned the important role of national governments under COVID-19 in supporting the recovery and transition of energy industry to move into a more sustainable future – ‘do not waste a good crisis’, said Adam. Finally, he emphasised the important role of considering sector coupling, the need of green hydrogen (from electrons to molecules) and the technical and economic challenges associated with it. During Q&A, Adam pointed out the importance of considering whole life cycle process when assessing the ‘Green level’ of a specific solution.

‘Career Management and Grid Modernization Workshop – With a relaunch of the CIGRE UK Young Members Mentoring Program’ was held successfully, with 163 registrations and 237 participants. We hope you enjoyed our workshop.

Our guest speaker, John McDonald from GE and CIGRE USNC shared his abundant experience about his life and work. The technological details about Grid Modernisation, data management, Smart Grid were also introduced during the workshop.

Mentoring during the career has also been heavily discussed during the workshop. CIGRE UK NGN mentoring scheme is a fantastic opportunity for the young professionals to get involved in CIGRE and connect with leaders in the power system industry.

CIGRE NGN Joint Wind Energy Webinar

On Wednesday 17th, June 2020, 14:00 – 16:00 (BST), the CIGRE UK and CIGRE Ireland NGN came together to have their first joint, online webinar on wind energy.

The event was based on the background of the growing research and application of wind energy in the past decades of years. In 2019, 60.4 GW of wind energy capacity was installed globally, a 19% increase from installations in 2018 and the second-best year for wind historically. Total capacity for wind energy globally is now over 651 GW. So how can we exploit the full potential of wind energy?

Four guest speakers were invited to share their perspective and experience on wind energy, including the latest research and development, pilot and commercial projects. The detailed information of the guest names and corresponding topics were:

  • Professor Vladimir Terzija, “Smart Frequency Control in Power Systems with a High Penetration of Nonsynchronous Generation”
  • Dr Peter Wall, “Identifying scarcities on the All-Island system in 2030 – perspectives from EU-SysFlex”
  • Tolulope Mayomi, “The opportunities of dynamic line rating for overcoming curtailment challenges”
  • Dr Xianxian Zhao, “Fast Frequency Support from Wind Turbine Systems by Arresting Frequency Nadir Close to Settling Frequency”

The event was successfully organised with more than 100 participants. Apart from the presentations, interactive polls and Q&A sessions were also taken place. With the rapid development of wind energy technology, the wind generation is anticipated to be one of the most significant contributors to meet the UK’s ambitious net-zero emission target.

In anticipation of the upcoming Global Young Member Showcase event in CIGRE Paris Session in August 2020, the NGN Committee of CIGRE UK hosted a presentation competition at the University of Manchester on 5th February 2020 to select UK young professional representatives for this global showcase event in Paris. This event allowed for a select group of young professionals to showcase their contributions to the latest solutions across the whole energy value chain, from generation to distribution, allowing for the opportunity to win tickets to the CIGRE Paris Session 2020 and potentially a bursary for travelling.

The abstracts submitted by the candidates were firstly assessed by the NGN steering committee and 10 candidates were invited to present their work in the presentation competition event on 5th February 2020, where they were judged by a panel of four senior CIGRE UK members, with extensive combined experience across a range of working categories in the energy sector. The CIGRE UK NGN committee is glad to announce that the four successful candidates to be nominated for attendance of the Paris Session in 2020 are:

  • Victor Timmers, a graduate power system engineer at Mott MacDonald, delivered an engaging presentation focusing on the development of a zero missing phenomenon identification tool.
  • Giulio Riccardi, an electrical engineer at Mott MacDonald, provided an overview of how digital engineering facilitates cable system design focusing on the Wimbledon cross site cable system project.
  • Gen Li, a researcher at Cardiff University, presented a striking method for analysis and protection of valve-side single-phase-to-ground faults in HB-MMC based bipolar HVDC systems.
  • Polly Osborne, an electrical power engineer at Burns & McDonald, delivered an exciting presentation outlining an innovative local energy master plan to decarbonise an industrial town, utilising a whole-system approach to energy.

Our webinar about “Offshore Wind Energy” jointly organized with Young Cigre Denmark was held successfully with over 170 attendees on Friday 2nd October. We hope you had a good time to this first webinar in collaboration with Denmark National Committee!

Our guest speakers, Lorenzo Zeni and Troels Stybe Sørensen from Ørsted gave us an overview about HVDC connected offshore wind farms and a perspective on the development of offshore wind in Ørsted respectively.
Steven Blair from Synaptec demonstrated integrated protection and condition monitoring for offshore wind using passive distributed sensing. Furthermore, GEN LI from Cardiff University School of Engineering presented the state-of-the-art of HVDC and offshore wind technologies in EU countries.

CIGRE NGN Visit to St John’s Wood Substation, London, England

On Tuesday 26th November 2019, members of the CIGRE UK NGN visited the St John’s Wood substation in London, one of most compact and complex substations operated by National Grid. This substation is the grid supply point (GSP) for both Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea boroughs. St John’s Wood substation hosts what is known as The London Connection, a 20km tunnel for a 400kV XLPE cable connection between Elstree and St John’s substation. This connection supports the supply for North West London and the City.

Before starting the visit around the substation, Julio Perez gave an overview of CIGRE UK and the activities organised by the NGN. Following this, James Watson from National Grid delivered a technical presentation on the importance of St John’s substation in the high-voltage supply for London, its configuration, as well as the type of equipment found at the substation.

After a safety briefing by James, the first stop was The London Connection underground tunnels, which houses the 400kV XLPE cables used for the connection to another major substation, Elstree. The London Connection is part of a series of underground tunnels designed to meet the increasing electricity demand from London whilst minimising road disruption.

Then we visited one of the buildings containing some of the gas-insulated switchgear, to reconfigure the supply points when required. James explained to us how the gas-insulated mechanism operated to interrupt an arc when opening circuit breakers and also what are the main procedures for managing faults. At the end of the visit, we had the chance to visit one of the main super-grid transformers which serve to step-down the voltage from the transmission level, from 400kV to 132kV.

CIGRE NGN Visit to Neilston Substation, Glasgow, Scotland

On Tuesday 10th Sep 2019, the CIGRE UK NGN hosted an event in Glasgow. The whole day event was composed of a series of technical presentations, from both industry and academia, followed by a visit to the Neilston substation.

Professor Campbell Booth, Head of the EEE Department at the University of Strathclyde opened the session. The first talk was an introduction of CIGRE delivered by Jingyi Wan, the CIGRE UK NGN Secretary and Treasurer. Followed by Dr Min Zhang from the University of Strathclyde, on how superconductors offer new solutions for the modern grid and a feasibility study of superconducting cables in the UK distribution network.

Dr Diptargha Chakravorty from TNEI presented his work on the Electric Spring, a controllable load for voltage and frequency regulation – jointly developed by Imperial and Hong Kong university.

Next, Mr Marcel Nedd from the University of Strathclyde introduced Frequency Containment, Electricity System Operator’s concepts for new dynamic frequency response service and how these services could affect the penetration limits of non-synchronous power infeed in GB.

Finally, Mr Antony Cooke from South Humber Bank Power Station presented what is a Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT), how synchronous generators respond to frequency excursions and how a CCGT’s control concept could be modified to provide faster response to frequency.

The afternoon session started with an overview of Phoenix project by Mr Craig Hume from Scottish Power Energy Networks followed by a visit to the Neilston substation. The Phoenix project explores the option of combining two technologies; Synchronous Condensers and Static Compensators to develop a hybrid solution.

CIGRE NGN-IEEE Student Branch Joint Event, University of Manchester, UK

On Wednesday 17th July 2019, the IEEE Student Branch UoM and the CIGRE UK NGN co-hosted an event at The University of Manchester. The event attracted 24 attendees, mostly new MSc and first-year PhD students.

The event had two primary aims: to increase awareness of IEEE Student Branches / Chapters and CIGRE NGN; and bring attention to the types of resources useful to young researchers produced by the IEEE and CIGRE.

These aims were met in the event through three talks. The first was delivered by James Hill, the CIGRE-UK NGN Institutions Collaborations Lead and Past-Chair of the IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter at UoM. His talk introduced the two institutions of IEEE and CIGRE, explained which publications are available from them, and how to be involved and get the most from the Student / NGN societies.

After this introduction, Prof. Paul Jarman explained how research can actively influence the direction that standards take, and conversely, how standards can help to influence and direct our research. Prof. Jarman drew on his vast experience from involvement with standards related to transformers to explain the process required for their establishment and revision.

Finally, Dr. Mathaios Panteli presented on his experience as a young researcher involved in a CIGRE working group during his PhD. He highlighted how beneficial this was to his career and how ideas he got from conversing with the senior personnel he was exposed to in this environment helped to add significant value to his final thesis.

CIGRE NGN Visit to Boskalis’ Cable Barge, Vlissingen, Netherlands

On Thursday 3rd May 2018 a group of 14 Cigre-UK NGN members travelled to the Netherlands for a unique opportunity to visit Boskalis’ Giant 7 cable barge.

The day started with technical presentations at Boskalis’ offices in Vlissingen where attendees were able to learn about subsea cable installation and repairs, and the interesting challenges faced. This was followed by an introduction to some of Boskalis’ past and present projects as well as a visit to their storage site at Vlissingen port where there was the opportunity to see the newly-built BS-III trenching tool .Cable-ship-2-300x225

In the afternoon, the group travelled to Rotterdam where the Giant 7 barge  was docked. The barge was being made ready for service and this allowed a great opportunity to explore and to understand the amount of work that goes in behind the scenes before the cable and trenching tool can be brought on board.

We would like to thank all of our attendees for their enthusiasm and questions throughout the day, and of course the team at Boskalis for their hospitality and especially for letting us stay on board for an extra couple of hours due to the interest and number of questions! CIGRE Paris Session 2018 Young Member (YM) Showcase

On Tuesday 20th February the Young Member (YM) Showcase competition was held at Manchester University to select 4 candidates to be put forward to the international round of the competition. The day consisted of 10 short-listed presentations which where judged by Carl Baker, Qiang Liu, Suipipi Weerasinghe, Simon Sutton and Aruna Gunatilake.
The lucky winners will now be put forward as the UK nominations to the international YM showcase for an opportunity to present at the CIGRE Paris session 2019. Up to 32 Young Members from across the world (2 per study committee) will be chosen for this prestigious prize.

10 Years of NGN Evening Event

In October 2017 we celebrated 10 years since CIGRE’s first Next Generation Network was set up here in the UK. The event was kindly hosted by Siemens UK in Manchester and successfully attracted 74 attendees. The opening speech was given by Philippe Adam, the CIGRE Secretary General. Adam Middleton, the Chair of CIGRE UK, and Jonathan Halliday, the founder of CIGRE UK NGN, gave talks to share their experience in CIGRE. The event also highlighted by the outlook for the future power system digitization technologies and wrapped up with the networking and poster session, which allow the young members to present their works.

CIGRE UK NGN Hunterston B Power Station Event

On 28 June 2017, the CIGRE UK NGN had a successful event at the Hunterston B Power Station.  Our guest speakers Colin Foote and Alan Davenport from Scottish Power Energy Network (SPEN) gave very interesting talks on the developments in SPEN network and specifically the Western Link project. The event also included a technical tour to the plant, which gave the attendees an excellent opportunity to see and know more about how the plant is operated and maintained.
