The University of Manchester had the pleasure of hosting John Wright, Principal Engineer & Technical Applications Engineer Leader – Europe, Central Asia & Sub-Saharan Africa at GE VERNOVA. John is also the UK Regular Member of CIGRE Study Committee B5 and recipient of the CIGRE B5 Technical Council Award.
John delivered a lecture for the students on the MSc course Electrical Power Systems Protection titled ‘Protection Life Cycle Management’. Around 30 students were in attendance of this event. The guest lecture covered:
- A history of protection equipment from 1900s until today
- Equivalent circuit diagram of CTs
- The relationship between relays and CTs
- Never open the circuit of a live CT!
- The principal goal of secondary protection systems is damage limitation to the system
- The lifetime of control & protection systems is only half or less than that of substation equipment – how does one manage the integration of old and new systems?
- The art of balancing performance, risk and cost for asset management
- The energy transition: we need to transition the grid to a different way of producing and consuming electricity
Many thanks to John Wright for delivering this insightful lecture and promoting CIGRE engagement at the University of Manchester.
This event also served as an introduction to CIGRE UK NGN and the planned University Hub, incorporating the University of Manchester, which will have its inaugural event in the next few months. Students had the opportunity to learn more about the purpose and activities of CIGRE and were invited to volunteer for the upcoming University Hub. Finally, thank you to our colleagues from the IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter at the University of Manchester for their efforts in co-sponsoring and making this event a success.
