November Webinar

About this Technical Webinar:

Synopsis | The drive to higher capacity connections has led to the expansion of the HVDC cable market sector and pushed the voltage ratings higher. 525kV extruded projects are in construction and development of larger projects is continuing event though only laboratory verification tests are available at present.

The lack of in service 525kV extruded cable projects means that even more onus has to be put on the qualification testing, routine testing, sample testing and assurance. This requires the cable engineers to get to grips with the various technologies and developments over the last 10 years and the splintering of the solutions. XLPE, nano-filled XLPE and HTPE are reality.

This webinar shall comprise of the tutorial  presented at the CIGRE 2024 Paris session  and consist a walk through the CIGRE Technical Brochure 852 “Recommendations for testing DC extruded cable systems for power transmission at a rated voltage up to and including 800 kV” published in November 2021, highlighting the changes and new information added since CIGRE TB496 which was published in April 2012. At the conclusion of the webinar the presenters personal view of the direction of travel of the HVDC extruded technology shall be given.

The presenter has a degree in Physics from Swansea University (Uni of Wales) and worked in various technical roles in BICC Supertension and Subsea Cables from 1988 to 2001, mainly in the development of cables and accessories and managing the development section of the Chief Engineer’s department for most of the 1990s. Founded PowerSure Technology Ltd. (PSTL) in 2001 and since then worked in the industry providing independent cable consultancy advice. PSTL has been involved in many cable projects particularly HVDC, subsea and EHV such as  200kV HVDC East West Interconnector Project, 400kV Hackney-West Ham (Olympic) Tunnel, Skagerrak 4 525kV HVDC, NEMO 400kV HVDC and ElecLink 320kV HVDC.  Represented CIGRE UK on WG B1.32 ‘Recommendations for Testing DC Extruded Cable Systems for Power Transmission at a Rated Voltage up to 500 kV’ and at present on WG B1.42 ‘Tests on transition joints for lapped and extruded HVDC cables’, B1.64 (TB852) and B1.66 (TB853).  Represented UK in Study Committee  B1 (Regular Member) from 2016 to 2020 and had been a member of numerous CIGRE Working Groups and is currently the Convener of B1.70 and a UK representative on B1.76.
