Advanced Monitoring of Overhead Line Distribution Networks
An Online Technical Webinar

As the utilisation and requirements of the distribution network increase so too does the need for localised network monitoring. The overhead network has historically been difficult to capture data, due to the construction of the system and the availability of equipment throughout the network to gather data. The Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) project “OHL Power Pointer” has trialled novel devices (Smart Navigator 2.0 sensors) that can be retrofitted to OHL networks and are capable of self-powered operation to provide real-time voltage, current, directional power flow and conductor temperature information. This information is used to assess network operation more accurately, such as directional power flow as a result of intermittent generation output, and directional fault detection (to more quickly identify the location of faults).
Working with engineers across WPD’s business (from the Policy, Future Networks and Network Strategy teams) five business needs were identified, all referenced within the “Distribution System Operability Framework” (DSO):
- Directional Power Flow Monitoring;
- Directional Power Flow State Estimation (using directional monitors to infer power flow direction through non-directional sensors);
- Detection of Auto-Recloser Operations (to reduce the need for site visits for asset maintenance);
- Directional fault detection (in 33kV networks with high levels of DG); and
- Conductor Temperature Monitoring (feeding into the short-term post-fault rating of overhead lines).
In this technical session, we explore the findings of the field trials and discuss the suitability and applicability of the solution for wider deployment in UK distribution networks.
