Demonstration of integrated protection and condition monitoring for offshore wind using passive distributed sensing | Steven Blair

A key challenge for offshore wind generation is providing effective, granular monitoring of the assets to improve maintenance scheduling and drive down the associated costs. This presentation will describe a commercial product demonstrator for array cable protection, fault identification, and failure prognostics that has been deployed on the 7 MW Levenmouth demonstration turbine. The system automates the response to cable faults, reducing outage times and operational cost by identifying and isolating faulted cables while allowing others in the array to stay in production. It also collects detailed electrical power quality and mechanical monitoring information (such as cable joint temperature) – at every turbine in an array. This enables clear and granular visualisation of asset performance, and predictive maintenance insights for long term asset management. The sensing technology is entirely passive, so the cost, size, and weight of instrumentation is substantially reduced by eliminating the need for power supplies, transformers, copper wiring, data networks, or GPS clock access at every measurement location.

European HVDC and Offshore Wind | Dr Gen Li

Europe now has a total installed offshore wind capacity of 22,072 MW from 5,047 grid-connected wind turbines across 12 countries. The HVDC technology for offshore wind integration is becoming more mature. This presentation will give the state-of-the-art of HVDC and offshore wind technologies in EU countries. The driving forces, key technologies and challenges will be presented and discussed.

Offshore wind and HVDC technology- An Overview | Lorenzo Zeni

The presentation will give an overview of HVDC grid connection systems for offshore wind power evacuation. The presentation will touch upon the technology in general as well as the most interesting aspects and open questions regarding the integration of these technologies in the power system, including stability, ancillary services, etc. The presentation will be given from an offshore wind power developer’s perspective.

Introduction to Ørsted Offshore focussing on grid connection systems for offshore wind farms| Troels Stybe Sørensen

Ørsted Offshore is the largest offshore wind farm developer in the world. This presentation will give an overview of the development Ørsted has been through focussing on the development in scale and complexity of the grid connection systems.

Steven Blair

 

Steven Blair is the Head of Power Systems Technologies at Synaptec. He leads Synaptec’s software and data analytics strategy. He holds a PhD in Electronic & Electrical Engineering and an MEng in Computer & Electronic Systems from the University of Strathclyde. He has been both a researcher and academic at the University of Strathclyde, including holding the Nokia lectureship position. He is very experienced in power system protection, power quality, real-time systems, IEC 61850, and communications technologies. Dr Blair is a member of IEC TC57 Working Group 10.

 

 

Dr Gen Li

 

Dr Gen Li is a Research Associate at the School of Engineering, Cardiff University. He was a Marie Curie Early Stage Research Fellow funded by the European Union’s MEDOW project. His research interests include control and protection of HVDC and MVDC technologies, power electronics, reliability modelling and evaluation of power electronics systems.

 

 

 

Lorenzo Zeni

 

Lorenzo Zeni is with Ørsted Offshore as a Senior Power System Specialist and is involved in electrical design and grid code compliance for large offshore wind farms. He holds MSc in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Padua (Italy). He carried out an industrially funded Ph.D. with Ørsted and the Technical University of Denmark on power system integration of large offshore wind farms by means of HVDC technology. He has been involved in Cigré activities since 2013, with contributions to TBs  604 and 619 and a few session papers

 

 

Troels Stybe SørensenTroels Stybe Sørensen is a Senior Director and Chief Specialist for Electrical Systems in Ørsted Offshore, he holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical engineering, and an eMBA in Management of Technology. Troels is a specialist in wind turbine electrical systems, offshore wind farm electrical systems and grid connection requirements. He has participated in offshore wind farm projects in various roles since about 2000, and he’s an experienced electrical project manager. He has managed and participated in numerous of development projects and R&D programs in the electrical infrastructure area incl. supervision of student projects at B.Sc. to Ph.D. level.  He has authored and co-authored more than fifty papers. He’s a member of the steering committee of Center for Electrical Power and Energy Technology at the Technical University of Denmark and member of steering committee of Powerlab.dk, and a board member of Cigré Danish National Committee.
