CIGRE Women’s Network UK
11th March 2020, 15:00 – 18:00
National Grid ESO, Faraday House, Warwick Technology Park,
Gallows Hill, Warwick, CV34 6DA
The next CIGRE Women in Engineering event, organised by the CIGRE UK Women’s Network and kindly hosted by National Grid, is a 3-hour event focusing on challenges we are facing in achieving zero carbon system operation.
Zero carbon system operation of the electricity system and network assets necessitates a fundamental change to how our system and networks are designed to operate, integrating newer technologies right across the system, from large scale off-shore wind to domestic scale solar panels and increased demand side participation, by using new smart digital systems to manage and control the system in real-time.
Transforming the electricity system and network assets so that it can operate at zero carbon is ambitious and challenging and requires us to work collaboratively in order to address and solve some critical engineering challenges.
The first session will focus on a number of key challenges and solutions that need to be addressed to operate the electricity system and network assets at zero carbon.
The second session will be a soft skill workshop “Building LeaderLike Communication Intelligence 3 ways” focusing on presentation skills (technics, mechanics & approaches), emotional awareness (availability & interaction) and communication skills (acceptance, awareness & resistance).
Please note that due to limited spaces, this event is open on a first come, first served basis.

Angela Wilks, Operation Manager at NG ESO
I’ve worked in the electricity industry since graduating in 1992 holding roles as a Power Engineering Consultant developing power system studies for industrial systems including project work in Great Britain with London Underground and work overseas on international projects in Syria and the Palestinian West Bank.
My current role is within the National Grid Electricity System Operator where I hold Energy and Transmission authorisations in the Electricity National Control Centre (ENCC) working 24/7 shifts. I lead a team to manage real time electricity power system operations to meet License standards safely and economically at all times. My roles in the ENCC include managing power system security and risks, making decisions in real time for critical incidents, forecasting national demand and taking energy balancing decisions to maintain system frequency within operational standards.
Paul Gallagher, Engineering Services & Innovation Manager at NG ET
With over 30 years’ experience in the energy industry, working on both the Gas and Electricity Transmission Systems, Paul has lead multiple departments, including the Transmission Network Control Centre, and is currently fulfilling both Engineering Services and Innovation Manager roles within National Grid Electricity Transmission. He is a chartered Electrical Engineer. Over the last 2 years he has also led for Electricity Transmission on development and delivery of a new Diversity and Inclusion strategy aimed at ensuring the business reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.
Robert Kahn, CEO of LeaderLike You! and RC Komm SA
Robert Kahn is a communications and leadership coach/trainer, working across a variety of industries and international non-governmental organisations.
He firmly believes that at the forefront of any organization, how leaders communicate is crucial to their success. His aim for anyone he works with, is that they get more of what they want, more often, with less hassle and resistance and ultimately, more buy-in! Becoming successful by design and not by chance. His LeaderLike You! septagon exemplifies the seven skills linked to such success: Leadership, Coaching, Training, Mentoring, Consulting, Managing and Sponsoring are all facets which come into play if you want to shine and get the most from your team.
