Unfortunately, due to operational restrictions, this visit has had to be cancelled.
On Wednesday, 2nd October 2024, starting at 10am, the CIGRE UK NGN committee has organsied an exclusive visit to the IFA1 HVDC Converter Station, located at the Sellindge Converter Station, Church Lane, Ashford, Kent, TN25 6AF.
This event, open to all CIGRE UK members, is a rare and precious opportunity, generously provided by our CIGRE Collective Member, National Grid, to explore the cutting-edge technology that powers our modern world. Typically, this facility does not allow visits, but thanks to a scheduled maintenance period, we have been granted special access.
The IFA1 Interconnector is a marvel of modern engineering, linking the UK and France with a 2000MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) electrical interconnector. Spanning approximately 70km, with 45km of subsea cable, it plays a crucial role in delivering secure, sustainable, and affordable energy between both countries. The converter station at Sellindge is where the magic happens, converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) for efficient long-distance transmission, and then back to AC for distribution. This facility is a testament to over 30 years of operational expertise and collaboration between National Grid and RTE.
The day will begin with an hour-long presentation and training session. You’ll then embark on a guided tour of the site. As you walk through the facility, you’ll witness firsthand the impressive infrastructure that enables efficient long-distance power transmission. At lunch time, networking opportunities abound as you connect with peers and industry leaders. Share your experiences, exchange ideas, and build relationships that could lead to future collaborations. This visit is not just about gaining technical knowledge; it’s about fostering a community of professionals dedicated to advancing the field of electrical engineering.
This visit, open to all CIGRE UK members, is limited to 30 people and tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, with a waitlist option in case of cancellations. There is a small fee of £15 + VAT to secure your place.
PPE Requirements: High visibility overall or overall with high visibility vest/jacket (overalls need to be flame resistant), safety boots, glasses, hard hat. No PPE will be provided on-site. No PPE, no access.
